So it was with utter joy that I jumped into Viz’s gorgeous English language reprint of 2015’s Itō Junji Self-Selected Masterpiece Collection. There was something in it that spoke to me on a primal level and cemented me a lifelong Junji Ito fan. Too often I’d seen men destroy women but now I was seeing a young woman destroy the men who would’ve likely hurt or disappointed her. Ito’s stark linework and bleak-yet-beautiful storytelling sucked me in and most importantly left me rooting for Tomie. The timeless tale of a deathless young woman who drives any man who meets her to madness, I adored the book and reread it till the spine fell apart. That’s where I would pick up Tomie, one of the most well-known entries in Ito’s horror back catalogue. But it was right next to a comic book store, a place I would spend most of my afternoons and weekends. When I was 12 we moved to a new part of London, one that was utterly detached from the place I’d grown up. Junji Ito’s work was some of the first manga I ever came across. Today, door-knocking is viewed with suspicion, and tragically, occasionally met with violence. Now, I treasure the openness, curiosity, and sincerity of both those visitors and my dad. The visit lasted close to an hour, and soon became a regular occurrence anytime Jehovah’s Witnesses knocked. As a child, I would roll my eyes at the intrusions. They shared their faith then my dad shared his, Islam. My dad opened the door wide, smiled, and welcomed them into the living room, offering them cups of tea. I peeked out the window to find a pair of suit-clad Jehovah’s Witnesses, and promptly retreated – from what I’d heard, most people avoided them. Ding-dong! It was the mid-’90s, in my childhood home in rural central New York, where we didn’t frequently get visitors. So here are some initial observations for the uninitiated, and some Memory Lane fodder for the rest of you. Although I’m not concerned with the business of genre taxonomy here, and nor do I want to pursue the aesthetics of an academic essay, there are a few things worth noting that sets the Dying Earth genre apart, and a few key texts to explore. There are plenty of stories about the Earth being gutted, but the Dying Earth is something quite different, and it deserves more attention. So maybe because of this rise in the popularity of post-apocalyptic media, or because a younger genre audience might have little knowledge of the fictions of yesteryear, I wanted to use my first posting on Jeff’s blog to write a little more about the Dying Earth genre. These days there’s some kind of cinematographer’s fetish for destroying landmark buildings and tearing up natural monuments. If you’re in a café out there there’s probably someone writing one next to you right now. You can’t move in Hollywood for people clutching screenplays about the apocalypse. It will also figure out a way to harness it to transcend the original notion of retribution. A good tale of revenge, whether it sees the actual retribution enacted, knows what that underlying emotion is. It’s the reactionary emotion to a loss that fuels the quest for a character to have something made right.Īlmost always though, there’s either a deeper need underneath the vengeance, usually coming to odds with the reactive emotions. It’s why so many protagonists and antagonists alike have their primary want in some form of vengeance or revenge. It’s a base motivator for both crime and justice, two sides of the same coin that drive characters to act in ways that naturally boost emotion. Vengeance is a powerful force in fiction, more so when dealing with crime fiction. |
